Qu'est-ce que la méthode Curly Girl ? L'explication complète + comment l'adapter avec Azayan

What is the Curly Girl Method? The complete explanation + how to adapt it with Azayan

You may have heard of the Curly Girl method on Instagram or TikTok — those dramatic hair transformations that magically reveal curls. But what exactly is this method? And is it compatible with natural products like those from Azayan?

We'll explain everything.

The origins: Lorraine Massey and the founding book

The Curly Girl method was born in 2001 with the publication of the book Curly Girl: The Handbook by American hairdresser Lorraine Massey. A specialist in curly hair for years, she describes a radically different approach: stop "fighting" your curls and learn to nourish them according to their true nature.

Since then, the method has conquered millions of women worldwide, popularized by social media under the hashtag #CurlyGirlMethod.

The fundamental principle

The central idea of the method is simple: curly hair is naturally dry, so any practice that further dries it out is harmful.

From there, the method defines what to eliminate and what to adopt.

What to eliminate

Ingredients:

  • Sulfates (lauryl/laureth sulfate) → strip sebum
  • Non-water-soluble silicones (dimethicone…) → waterproof the hair shaft
  • Dehydrating alcohols (alcohol denat., isopropyl alcohol) → dry out hair
  • Waxes and mineral oils → accumulation impossible to remove without sulfates

Habits:

  • Brushing dry hair → breaks curls
  • Terrycloth towel → creates frizz
  • Hairdryer without diffuser on high heat → weakens hair fiber
  • Washing hair every day → depletes natural sebum

What to adopt

  • Sulfate-free shampoo (low-poo) or conditioner washing (co-wash)
  • Conditioner with each wash
  • Styling products applied to wet hair
  • Air drying or diffuser drying
  • Microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt
  • Detangling with fingers or a wide-tooth comb on wet hair

The Curly Girl routine in 4 steps

1. The final wash (once only) Before starting the method, do a final shampoo with sulfates (without silicones) to eliminate all accumulated chemical residues.

2. Gentle washing Sulfate-free shampoo on the scalp only. Or co-wash on the entire length if hair is very dry.

3. Care Generous conditioner on the lengths, gentle detangling, rinse with cold water.

4. Styling Activating cream + gel, applied by scrunching on wet hair. Air dry without touching.

How to adapt the Curly Girl method with Azayan

The Azayan range is 100% compatible with the Curly Girl method. All formulas are sulfate-free, non-water-soluble silicone-free, and dehydrating alcohol-free.

Azayan's advantage: its formulas are inspired by natural ingredients from Morocco — a beauty that speaks directly to Mediterranean and North African curls.

Should you follow the Curly Girl method to the letter?

No. The method is an inspiration, not a religion. Many curly-haired individuals adapt the principles to their hair: some use a gentle sulfate shampoo once a month for clarification, others incorporate water-soluble silicones.

The main thing is to understand why certain ingredients and habits harm curls, and adapt accordingly.
