Crème activatrice ou gel fixateur : quelle est la différence et lequel choisir ?
Partager
Activating cream. Setting gel. Two products that every curly-haired person ends up having in their bathroom. But what exactly is the difference? Can one be used without the other? And in what order?
Activating Cream: Hydration + Activation
What it is: Activating cream (also called leave-in, styling cream, or curl cream) is a no-rinse treatment applied to wet hair. It has a creamy or milky texture and remains in the hair until the next wash.
Its role:
- Provide and retain moisture in the hair fiber
- "Awaken" the hair's natural curl pattern
- Nourish lengths and ends
- Give curls a soft definition
Its texture: Creamy, light, absorbs into the hair.
The result: Defined, soft, nourished curls — with moderate hold (a few hours to a day, depending on the hair type).
→ Azayan's Define Curl Cream: formula with Damascus jasmine, hydrates and activates natural curls
Setting Gel: Definition + Hold
What it is: Setting gel (or curl gel) is a styling product with a gel-like texture that sets the curls formed by the cream. It is applied over the cream.
Its role:
- Set curls in their final shape
- Form a protective sheath against humidity and frizz
- Ensure long-lasting hold (all day)
Its texture: Gel-like, slightly "sticky" upon application — forms a "cast" that disappears once the hair is dry.
The result: Defined, set curls, protected from frizz — with all-day hold.
→ Azayan's Lock Curl Hold Gel: with white musk, flexible hold without alcohol or stiffness

Can they be used separately?
Cream alone: Possible for light curls (types 2A-3A) or between washes. Hold will be limited, but curls will be nourished and natural.
Gel alone: Possible if hair is already well-hydrated. But on dry hair, gel alone can make curls stiff and dull.
Both together: This is the winning combination for most curly-haired people. The cream hydrates and activates, while the gel sets and protects.
How to apply the two?
Always: cream before gel.
The golden rule for curly hair styling: go from lighter to heavier. The cream penetrates the hair fiber, the gel coats it on top.
If you reverse the order (gel then cream), the cream can no longer penetrate—you'll only dampen the surface of the gel, and your curls won't be deeply moisturized.
The Azayan duo: complementary formulation
Azayan's Define Curl Cream and Lock Curl Hold Gel have been formulated to work together:
- The cream prepares and activates the curl with shea butter and castor oil
- The gel seals and sets with flaxseed and hemp oil, without dehydrating alcohol
The combination creates an encapsulation effect: moisture is retained inside, frizz stays outside.
How much product to use?
There's no absolute rule—it depends on thickness, length, and porosity. In general:
- Fine or short hair: a small dollop of each
- Thick or long hair: two dollops of cream, one of gel
- Very porous hair (dry, damaged): more cream, moderate gel
If curls fall flat → more gel. If curls are stiff → less gel, more cream.
